There's been no more ending seeable to the controversy complete Linux desktop environments, and with new contenders including Unity, GNOME 3, and Cinnamon–to name just few–users now face more choices than ever earlier.

For many longtime Linux users, however, there's nothing like the welcoming look of the old, familiar Dwarf 2 user interface, and that's just what a newborn Linux dispersion has set ahead out to deliver.

Based along Debian Linux, SolusOS is a beginner-friendly desktop Linux whose next version–like a sho in alpha–features a GNOME 3 fork studied to look and behave just same GNOME 2.

SolusOS quick sprinted up DistroWatch's page-hit rankings following the spill of its offse stable version, called "Eveline," back in May. Right away situated at No. 26 thereon list, the distro just saw the eject of a fifth alpha adaptation of SolusOS 2 about a month ago.

I had a chance newly to speak with Ikey Doherty, Almighty of the Linux Mint Debian Edition and now the SolusOS fancy's founder and lead developer, about SolusOS and what's future day in the next release. Hither are some of the highlights you can wait to find oneself in the next version of this up-and-coming Linux distro.

1. 'The Truest GNOME 2-same Experience'

SolusOS's original release, which is currently the stable version, features the GNOME 2.30 screen background, simply "we completely know eventually it's going to lead away," Doherty explained. Accordingly, SolusOS 2 will use a custom version of GNOME 3.4 called GNOME Classic instead.

"We've spotted IT and molded it into something of our own," Doherty said. "Made-up connected top of GNOME 3.4 tech, using Metacity, GNOME Panel, Argonaut, etc., information technology looks and behaves identically to GNOME 2 without the need for a brand bran-new 'speedy' computer with hardware acceleration and provides the truest GNOME 2-like experience today."

The screenshot below offers a small taste of GNOME Classic's expression and feel.

Now in alpha, SolusOS 2 bequeath feature a completely overhauled musical theme (Click image to enlarge.)

2. 'Out-of-the-Box' Multimedia

Supported on the Linux 3.3.6 kernel, SolusOS 2 currently includes LibreOffice 3.5.4, variation 13.0.1 of both Firefox and Thunderbird, Adobe Flash 11.2.202.235, VLC 2.0.1, GNOME Panel 1:3.4.2.1-5solusos1, Nautilus 1:3.4.2-1.2, and SolusDesktop 3.4.3.2.1, among other packages. Also enclosed are firmware for some common wireless LAN chipsets and a variety of non-exempt codecs for what the project team calls an "unconscious-of-the-box" multimedia experience.

"We see to it we use a careen solid fundament for stability whilst providing a rolling application stream," Doherty explained.

3. Top-Notch Usability

SolusOS 2 will as wel feature a "totally overhauled" theme, the project team up says.

"We believe usability cardinal to the desktop, so we've set active fixing many demotic issues that affect Dwarf 3.4 in Wheezy," they explicate. "We've in the end purged the last of the symbolic icon theme abusers, pushing patches to Nautilus, Totem, gedit, and GNOME Panel. We've departed with truth significance of SolusOS with v. 2, putting an emphasis on thin altogether its meanings, resources, OR looks."

SolusOS 2 is distillery merely in alpha, of course, so it's not by a blame sigh ready for production purposes. This latest one is the last exploratory version, however, so a genus Beta sack won't be far behind. Due to appear in that beta series, in fact, is a plenty of new, SolusOS-specific software package, including secrecy and parental controls, enhanced media and art functionality, and updated packages.

SolusOS 2 is planned to be a Long Term Reinforcement release, and will reach its final version "just about the same time that [Debian] Reedy goes stable," the project team says.

Want to check out SolusOS for yourself in the meantime? Information technology's available gratis download in 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the SolusOS site.
